Nicki Minaj, born Onika Tanya Maraj in 1984, grew up with an abusive, drug-addicted father. Her 2010 debut album, Pink Friday, and her single, "Your Love," topped Billboard's charts. A frequent "cameo" singer,

Quotes

"I've always had this female-empowerment thing in the back of my mind because I wanted my mother to be stronger, and she couldn't be. I thought, 'If I'm successful, I can change her life.'"

"Fantasy was my reality."

Minaj's voice was featured in seven songs on Billboard's Hot 100 in 2010. In August 2012, it was reported that Minaj was slated to become a judge on the popular television show American Idol.

Early Life

Hip-hop artist, singer. Born Onika Tanya Maraj on December 8, 1984, in Queens, New York. Minaj's father was a severe drug addict with a long history of violence. At one point, he set fire to the family's home in a failed attempt to kill Minaj's mother. Those early struggles, Minaj has said, helped fuel her drive to rise above the life her parents knew. "I've always had this female-empowerment thing in the back of my mind," she told Details magazine, "because I wanted my mother to be stronger, and she couldn't be. I thought, 'If I'm successful, I can change her life.'"
To reach that point, however, the young Minaj developed personas for herself that would allow her to be a "new person." An early incarnation was someone she called "Cookie," then came "Harajuku Barbie," before finally settling on Nicki Minaj. "Fantasy was my reality," she has said. Minaj clearly had a knack for performance. At the age of 12, she authored her first rap, then went on to delve into acting at La Guardia High School of Music and Art, the school that inspired the movie Fame.

Rapper and Singer

Determined to make it in the music business, Minaj took on backup singing roles for local New York City rappers. Soon, she began writing her own material. She was eventually discovered by Dirty Money CEO Fendi, who came across Minaj's MySpace page, loved what he heard, and immediately signed her to his label.
That connection led Minaj to Lil Wayne, who collaborated with her on a series of mix tapes, the first of which, Playtime is Over, was released in April 2007. The recording, and subsequent mixed tapes, showcased Minaj's female swagger and out-front style.
By early 2010, considerable anticipation had built up around Minaj's much discussed, much covered debut album, which was scheduled for release that fall. In April of that year, she released her first single, "Massive Attack." Two months later she won Best Hip-Hop Female at the annual BET Awards. She dedicated the award to Lil Wayne.
In August 2012, several news outlets reported that Minaj was slated to become a judge on season 12 of the popular television show American Idol.

Lira_ a star in her own way

LIRA

With millions of records sold and a list full of accolades, Lira is the brightest star coming out of South Africa.  She was also crowned Glamour magazine South Africa's 2008 "Woman of the Year."  A true trendsetter, Lira was the first African artist to release a BluRay DVD and the first South African to have a video featured on VH1.  The platinum-selling megastar performed at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Kick-off and sang for Nelson Mandela at his 92nd birthday celebration.  In August 2011 she released her first American EP, Lira, which was a precurser to her upcoming sixth studio album, Rise Again, to be released exclusively in the U.S.

A star in her own right, Lira has four platinum selling albums and has shared the stage with Alicia Keys, John Legend, and Hugh Masekela. Her latest U.S. release, "Rise Again," is out now and available online. In the first part of our conversation, which took place days after the BET Awards (where she was nominated for the Best International Act: Africa award, Lira opened up about her deliberate choice to tell a different African story: growing up in apartheid South Africa and her relationship with the African Diaspora community. While she's no stranger to the big lights, her music, which she calls "Afro Soul" that speaks "the human condition," reflects an innate commitment to the tenets of equality, love, and freedom. That commitment is also reflected through the work she does with the Nelson Mandela Children's Foundation.

In part two of our conversation, below, Lira (a former accountant) recalls how she overcame her fear of failure and why she thinks it's so important to nurture your gifts.
Next time on Home, from Home: Afro-Parisian "groove theorist," Bibi Tanga. He and his band will perform at Grand Performances on July 28.

April Fool in August Lolling

That Explains It

Why do we celebrate April Fools Day?
Why do we celebrate April Fools Day?
Truth is we really don't know where the tradition of playing pranks on people came from.
There are a few theories floating around though.
  • When the western world used the Julian calendar, the year began on March 25th because they celebrated the start of a new year with the start of spring. However since that fell in the Holy Week, the celebrated it on the first of April. However when we switched to the Gregorian calendar in the 1500s, we moved the New Year to the first of January. According to the most widely told story, those who still celebrated the New Year on April 1st were called April fools.

  • The Encyclopedia of Religion and the Encyclopedia Britannica thinks that the timing of April Fool's Day is directly related to the arrival of Spring, when nature 'fools' humans with erratic weather.

  • The Country Diary of Garden Lore has a theory that April Fools Day commemorates "the fruitless mission of the rook (the European crow) who was sent out in search of land from Noah's flood-surrounded ark."
So, on April 1st are you going to be the tricked or the trickster?
